Palau, Cook Islands and Tuamotu IslandsCountry forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea
Hello Could you give me some advice about inexpensive sleeping accommodations in Palau, Cook Islands and the Tuamotu Islands? Camping would be also fine. Thank you very much for your answers :).
The Cook Islands: Vara's in Rarotonga, Aremango's on Rarotonga, Matriki Beach Huts on Aitutaki Tuamotus: The are several pensions in the main village area of most of the atolls. 'Cheap' is a relative term in French Polynesia. You can do an internet search for 'pensions tuamotu' and find lots of options such as this place: http://www.pension-bounty.com/ or this http://www.pensionhotu.com/en/accommodation Tetemanu Village on Fakarava in the Tuamotus is in a fantastic location with extraordinary diving/snorkelling off the porch but it's not cheap. It is however cheaper than most other places in French Polynesia with that kind of underwater access at the front door. I can't help with Palau but I seem to recall other posters saying that you can camp in the Rock Islands. Cheers, Mike | 1
HEY MIKE Thank you very much for your suggestions :). | 2
The Palau tourism site(visitpalau.com) will have a list of the accommodations available. There are some inexpensive motels(we stayed at Lehn's -US$45 in 09-others were cheaper ) as well as homestay styled places on Babeldaob. Camping is not permitted in Koror but you can camp in the Rock Islands, Peleliu, Anguar and maybe Kayangel - you should check with authorities before camping. Also there is a charge for camping in the Rock Islands as it is a marine sanctuary. | 3
I've been to Palau 3 times on my own and I've always tried to keep my accommodation costs to a minimum. The problem is it's not especially renowned for cheap accommodation. In Koror I've stayed at Guest Lodge and Lehns Motel (both about $50 per night). There is also the New Koror Hotel for around the same price, although I've not stayed there. If you can find anything cheaper in Koror, let me know and I'll stay there next time! I've heard accommodation can be cheaper over in Pelelieu, but I've not been there. | 4
