Papua New Guinea

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea

Hi

My husband and I are looking to plan a trip to Papua New Guinea in september or october this year. We are currently travelling through Indonesia and will probably end up in Papua before heading across to Papua New Guinea if its possible to do.

Has anyone been recently? We would love to hear about your experiences and any tips you can give us.

Is anyone looking to travel there around this time as I am sure the bigger the group the cheaper the trip will be as it looks quite expensive. We may possibly have another 2 travels interested but would be good to get the numbers up.

Cheers
Amy

Hi Amy,

I would love to go to Papua New Guinea in September this year. I´m travelling around the world and I´m in Bolivia right now. There are people telling me I shouldn´t go there on my own so I´m looking for companion. I would like to see the Goroka Show there.

Enjoy Indonesia!

Hi Amy,

It sounds like my plans are similar to your own. I'm hoping to be in Indonesia fairly soon. The plan is to head out east, cross into PNG for a few weeks (hopefully including the Goroka show) and then cross back into Indonesia and do more travelling there.

What are you doing about a PNG visa? It would be very risky to just turn up at the PNG consulate in Jayapura. It's much better to get a visa in advance from somewhere else if you can, but this can be tricky too as PNG embassies are few and far between.

Also be aware that if you have a VOA (visa-on-arrival) for Indonesia, this can greatly complicate the border crossing too.

I attempted this border crossing three years ago and it turned into a total disaster, costing me a lot of money in the process, so I'd advise you to plan carefully, or have a contingency plan.

Hi,

I see that the trip was planned for September/October. Is there any updated information you could give me on getting from Indonesia to PNG?

@ Dana

I did it last month - dead easy. I think it should be unproblematic as long as you have a PNG visa in advance (don't rely on the consulate in Jayapura) AND an Indonesian visa issued in advance (i.e. NOT a visa-on-arrival)

Good luck
