Papua to Indonesia then East Timor,

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea

Hello. I'm planning to visit Papua, Indonesia, East Timor in one time coming December,
and would like to know the best routing.
I would like to start from Port Moresby then finish in Bali.

Also, does anyone know those below?

1. Is it possible to go from Port Molesby to Jayapura by land easily?
2. From Jayapura, are there any flight to Dili in East Timor? (Melpati doesn't fly at this moment...)

Thank you!

  1. No. It's a long way, with roads missing on at least three stretches. You must take boats on those bits, or fly.
    2. No. You must fly via Bali, or go by Pelni ship via Ambon to Kupang and by bus from there.

It would be very rushed to try and squeeze all the above into a single one month long trip.

Thank you very much for those information!
Could you also advise

1. How many days do I need to estimate if I take roads and boats to the border, if I stop only the major cities for 1 or 2 days.
Also, do you have any suggestions about the route to take?

2. Are there regular ferries from Ambon to Kupang?
(**Are there any way to check the schedule of ferries from Ambon to Kupang?
I've checked the website of Pelni but the schedule haven't updated. Also, I've called them but couldn't reach them...)

Thank you.

  1. Impossible to give estimates as it would depend on how quickly you manage to get boats to move on from each port.
I'd allow at least a month, and if you only stopped for a day or two in the major cities along the way you might as well not bother and just fly.

    2. Yes, but only once every two weeks. Try Pelni later again, using a date within 2-3 weeks, then calculate adding 2 weeks to that.

Thank you very much.
I would try to get a boat, then if I found it difficlut i will fly.
Again, thank you very much.
