Planning a 6+ months trip from September going east from PNG..Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea
I have been working loosely on this idea of starting off in PNG in September and then head eastwards and see whatever ships I could find (yachts/cargo). I hate to rush through places, and so this time round I have decided to have an open ended schedule, and staying as long in one place as I feel like, and then move on. My plan was 6-8 months, maybe more, from September. But reading the South Pacific LP Guide, makes me wonder about the timing and even the direction I will be travelling in. From october to april you have the cyclone season, and so I would be heading straight into that, leaving in September. And also, I read that the trade winds go from east to west, in the very opposite direction I would be travelling. So my question is, is it in fact "foolish" to start off in September and then go from West to East for those 6-8 months, and then ending the trip when in fact the cyclone season ends? Will there be ships going eastwards at all, doing that time? Coming from Denmark, i'd much prefer leaving in September, when the weather here starts to deteriorate. September-May are perfect months to travel coming from northern Europe. But I would hate to miss out on the best months of the South Pacific. Any advice? Edited by: sindberg
Maybe I should rephrase my question. Has anyone here travelled in the South Pacific region between September and May, and if so, how was it? :) | 1
