| prophetajeremaiah01:28 UTC25 Jul 2007 | I've got a few vaccinations lined up for my trip to PNG. Many I'm covered for already, and am just having boosters of Hep A, B and Rabies (border areas with Papua especially). But one advisory has come up on the good old National Health Service radar: Japanese B Encephalitis. I quote:
"Japanese B encephalitis was first reported in 1995 in islands in the Torres strait region of the Western Province. These are areas well away from Port Moresby and only likely to be visited by the most adventurous travellers."
Now I hadn't planned on heading into the Torres Strait, but I do like to think of myself as an adventurous traveller (I'm going to PNG, after all). I will definitely be staying in villages around the place, and visiting remote island groups. And I really don't fancy coming down with this thing. Do any of the veteran PNG travellers here have a view on the relative merits of getting vaccinated against Japanese B Encephalitis? Because my local surgery here in rural England sure as hell don't know what to suggest.
And did you know that the vaccine is made from mice brains? Nice.

As to other areas that may have that problem, I'll leave it to Laszlo and the other PNG experts here.
