PNG or Papua in 10 days. worth it?

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea

Hi all,

I have 10 days of vacation this chinese new year in february and would love a taste of PNG or Papua, Is it worth is to come this way with only 10 days or should I focus my research on somewhere a little more accessible say north sumatra? these are 2 places in indo i have not been to and would love to check it out.

Thanks

PNG is definitely NOT Indonesia. It is an independent country, and the people are Melanesian (as are the Papuans) not Asian.

a little touchy? did i call it indonesia? or did i ask if 10 days was enough for a taste?

Hehehe ... lets put the bad start back into a positive direction :)

The question of West Papua or PNG as a 10-day trip would probably be based on what you are looking for in a trip and where you are starting your journey from. And if you are traveling independently or in a package tour.

My general take though one it is that 10-days would limit you to one area of Papua or PNG with a significant time traveling and less time exploring the area.

Many tourists to Papua go for less than 10 days.
They just go to Jayapura, get their permit, then fly to Wamena.
It's a costly trip for a few days, but I think the scenery and culture make it worthwhile IF you can afford it and IF you go with realistic expectations (not expecting stone age primitives).

PNG would be even pricier with a 10 day limit.

I think OG got confused as OP said "these are 2 places in indo i have not been to"
I guess that referred to Papua and North Sumatra then.

"did i call it indonesia? "
well, you did say- "these are 2 places in indo i have not been to"

Laszlo, I wasn't confused, but I think the OP was. If you live in Oceania, there are all sorts of political reasons for avoiding that confusion.
