PNG out in the wild. Advice needed!Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea
Hey there! I was wondering if you'd be able to give me some advice! I am going to the be in country from January to March, about 90 days, perhaps longer. My friend and I typically do not follow the beaten path. We generally like to camp, trek, stay with locals and make our own food. Given the season and countryside, do you think PNG is suited to this type of travel, and if so, what parts of the country would you recommend we investigate further? Visas, weather, where to go, interesting villages, etc... Keep in mind I have zero interest in hotels, hostels or resorts. More like beaches, islands, trekking, camping, mountain tops, nature preserves, islands and villages... G
I have never been to PNG, but have been researching my trip from 14-29 October2010. Nothing I have read would encourage me to travel the countryside outside of a group. Crime is the reason. Violent crime by rascals. Theft by almost everybody else. A very Christian country with a very violent culture. | 1
I have traveled and trekked in PNG quite a lot on my own and only had the most positive experiences. However, I would NOT camp out in the wild on my own - this would be less safe than staying in villages, or camping out with villagers from the village that owns the land in question. Browsing through exiting posts on PNG could answer many of your Qs. | 2
