PNG to Solomons by boat

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea

Hi,

My fiancée and I plan to go from PNG to the Solomons by boat. Has anyone done it? We both come from visa free countries for the Solomons. I know that we need $, an ongoing flight and a passport; anything else? Advice? Best routes?

Thanks

Nick

Best advice is to read the question "Any news about travelling by boat from PNG to Solomons?" posted on 14th December 2008 on this forum.

There are two routes: Bougainville to Mono and the Shortlands, or Tasman Island to the Ontong Java atoll. The problem with the latter is the lack of on-going transport to the rest of Solomon Islands (Ontong Java, or Lord Howe {not the Australian one} is in the Malaitan Outer Islands - one of the outlying Polynesian groups. Very beautiful, and the villages are well-looked-after, but ships only come once every couple of months.
The other route is only semi-legal - several people, notably Laszlo, have done it, however.
