Reassurance about current weather in the Cook Islands?Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea
Hi there, Also, we will probably hire a car for Aitutaki (don't want to use a scooter as I'm pregnant and wouldn't feel safe, and if it's going to be raining, it's no doubt going to be better in a car)...should I really be booking this before we arrive? Or can someone recommend a place to go when we get there? We're staying at Samade... And lastly, I've read varying reports about the safety of drinking the water. I'm being quite cautious at the moment (due to the baby I'm growing), so I guess I'll have to avoid washed salad, and things that may contain water (juices that aren't 100%, ice etc). Does anyone know if the water is really not safe? Thankyou!
Generally speaking showers in the Cook Islands means a likelihood of afternoon showers like you describe for Brisbane. Maybe someone with feet on the ground there will respond regarding current trends and what's happening right now. Aitutaki has less rain than Rarotonga. I've never had a problem with drinking water on Aitutaki. Many locals save rainwater for drinking and it is normally untreated. Bottled water is plentiful but I wouldn't worry about ordering water by the glass in the local eating establishments. Cars on Aitutaki are limited. I'd book one in advance. Be sure and take in a couple of island nights and culture nights while you're there. Samades has a great culture night. Tapunas has great dinner fare. I recommend anything wrapped in a banana leaf. | 1
Popoara Ocean Breeze hires rental cars, they are close to Samade - say 600 metres away. Otherwise Rino's Rentals in town has the largest fleet of rental cars on Aitutaki. Water is purchased by the bottle usually on Aitutaki. But when you go to Koru Cafe (awesome place) which is about 350 metres from Samade, they immediately serve you a carafe of purified water to go with your order. Remain cautious with food handling and the types of foods you can/can't eat due to pregnancy. Avoid salads if you can help it, but should you have a small portion to the side of your plate, request that this is triple washed beforehand. The summer season is over now, so I expect that the weather by the end of May to have far less precipitation, lower humidity, shorter daytime hours, and perhaps a nip in the air at night-time. Take a light cardy or light shower-proof jacket with you for night-times. Once the sun sets, the temps cool down after 6pm. Glorious sunsets seen from the Samade bar. Not sure that they still host a weekly island night. Best check with the owner when you arrive Aitutaki. Aitutaki has both sand-flies and mossies. Be vigilant at all times, wear suitable light-coloured clothing, and use natural repellants/products. | 2
