| ubertas14:32 UTC23 Apr 2007 | Hey everyone
I'm looking to fly to port moresby from cairns sometime soon. What I want to do is spend a few months living at a fishing village. Is this possible? I have never been to PNG. I'm looking for some natural and 'back to basics' living. Has anyone else ever done something like this before?

It might be a good idea to fly direct from Port Moresby to the north coast (Lae or Madang) or any of the islands. Port Moresby is not really worth hanging around, although it good be a starting point if you plan to stay on the south coast of PNG.
Some villages have guesthouses. Sometimes local people will invite you to stay in their village. Travel slowly and with public transport, this way you will meet many people. Do contribute to costs/supplies. It might be a better idea to just travel around and take an opportunity to stay in a village if this arrises (that's what I did). It might actually be interesting to stay in more different parts of the country. If you have one particular place you want to visit, you can always try to radio ahead to ask if you can stay in the village for a while.
Get the PREVIOUS edition of Lonely Planet's PNG guide for information about different parts of the country. The latest one is far less detailed.
