FIRST INTERNET CAFÉ OPENS ON REMOTE ROTUMA

Fiji telecom uses satellite to connect the island

SUVA, Fiji (Fijilive, May 12, 2008) - The remote island of Rotuma had more cause for celebration today with the opening of its first Internet café.

The establishment of the Connect Internet Café in the Post Fiji Building in Ahau, coincided with Rotuma Day celebrations that began today.

Telecom Fiji Limited’s Acting CEO Taito Tabaleka said the provision of Internet services to Rotuma was no easy feat.

"This is the first Connect Internet Café we have set up with the use of our satellite services, VTSat," said Tabaleka. "This is a very exciting development, because it means that the people of Rotuma now have access to the Internet digital super-highway which gives them a wealth of information at their fingertips."

The Connect Internet Café currently has two terminals and will open from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on week days depending on power availability.

Tabaleka said Post Fiji employees are currently being trained to man the café.

TFL is working with Connect to provide access points to enable Internet services to customers in other parts of Rotuma.
