Safe in Suva?

Been reading lately about the increasing problems in Suva (90,000 in squatters camps, don't go out at night, etc.). We were there in '99 and it was a great town so it's sad to see these changes if they're true. Any recent experiences?

It was a bit dicey after the 2000 Coup, but it's okay now. It was extremely safe when Bainimarama had his troops on road blocks. They made sure there was no trouble. They were also very friendly and courteous. It's not a bad idea to travel by taxi at night though. on the whole, a safe city.
