Sailing around Tonga

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea

Hi All,

A group of friends and myself are sailing around Tonga for a week in January. We are wondering if there are many places on the surrounding islands that have markets for buying food etc.
We sail around Kenutu, Ava, Hunga, Taunga, Avalau, Fangsito Is., and a few others if we have time.

Cheers.

Hi, I sailed out of Neiafu (Va'vau) in 2004 and 2006. There is NO provisioning on the islands you mention. IF you are very organised, you could gather everything you need in one day in Neiafu. Fruit and vegetables at the easy-to-find market, fish from chillers at the back of the market, or from shop beside where the ice is made. There is a Western-style bakery a few minutes' walk up a side street (local bread is pretty gutless), a butcher ditto, a few small and not wonderfully stocked supermarket, getting mixer drinks and snacks is often difficult, take your Duty Free allowance. My biggest tip is - tell each person on the trip to bring a supermarket bag full of useful stuff....... you'll eat more snacks than you imagine; and/or tell each one to bring the 'makings' for one meal (someone better organise this or you might all bring the same stuff!!) - pancake mix and topping, cheese and biscuits and pickle stuff, pizza and toppings....... will save you trying to find the un-findable. That said, I've just sailed through Tuvalu and Kiribati and the provisioning there was even more difficult....... ENJOY!

Thanks so much for your help. I called the agent we booked the cat through and have arranged to have provisioning on-board when we get there. Though expensive, seems like an easier thing to do :)

Cheers, Heidi
