Sailing Home, or at least half way...Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea
Hey i'm a 22year old Irish guy currently in South east Asia. I'm looking for any info or contacts on becoming a deckhand on a boat sailing across the pacific or even just island hopping around south pacific. I'm just looking for the experience of sailing the sea, the terms and length and conditions dont really need to be anything special. Any help at all or even like minded people who are as clueless about it as i am are welcome to post!
This may not be too helpful, but when I was in college, i read up on how to apply for a cruise ship job. Its not exactly working on a freighter as a deck hand, but could be exciting plus you get paid to go to luxury destinations. That being said, you work your ass off, but could be fun. Its been a long time and i have no idea even where to suggest to look, but I found this link. Check it out: john | 1
Very few yachts travel the S. Pacific from Nov to April due to cyclone season. Freighters in the SP usually hire cheap Asian workers, probably not much chance you'll find a job on one of them. | 2
The chance of getting work on a freighter without certification is nil. Don't know about the yachts, but I always heard the way to get a job on them is to ask around in a yacht club, put a notice on the notice board etc. You won't get paid for it and immigration requirements in certain countries may spoil your plans. Good luck anyway. Live the dream before you get on the treadmill. | 3
