Saipan Suggestions

Hello,
I'm heading to Saipan in late June. Usually I'm not interested in these packaged island tour destinations, and everything I've read describes Saipan as "package tour nightmare". I'm hoping that someone here will be able to offer me some suggestions on a different experience and activities. I'm interested in lesser known beaches, hikes, anything local, pretty much anything that would steer away from the usual golf resort crowd activities. Thanks!
