Samoa Tattoos

Will be going to Samoa in a couple months, and though the Lonely Planet guidebook offers an interesting section on tattooing, it, unfortunately, does not name any of the local artists. Any information on tradtional tattoo artists in Samoa would be most appreciated.

The best Samoan tattooist died recently in NZ, his missus bashed his brains out with the blunt end of an axe because he was rooting around.

When I was at Stevensons resort at Manasi on Savaii last year and there was a guy in the village next door busy tattooing tourists.
You can also get Samoan tattoos done in Auckland.

i agree that mats is the one to ask abount tatooing. i almost got one when i was there but the hygene issue was a problem, if your going to get one make sure you get shots for hep etc before you leave. I spoke to one guy doing tattoos right near the fruit markets in apia, he was using a machine but used many of the traditional designs from the larger body tattoos to do the arm bands. Good luck

hepatitis C
There is no vaccination for hepatitis C. In Australia, this is the fastest growing (notifiable) comminicable disease. It is transmitted when the blood of an infected person enters the bloodstream of another person - such as through unsterile tattooing equipment. I don't have information about prevalence in Samoa, but be careful. To find out more about hepatitis C, i suggest visiting www.hepatitisc.org.au<br><br>
