Samoan Independence Day Holiday in early June

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea

I know the first few days of June will be a big holiday in Samoa. Can anyone tell me how that might impact traveling there? I'll only be in the country for about 8 days (starting May 30th) and I'm trying make some plans now. Is it best to stay put during those few days or just keep moving? Is being there during the Independence celebration a good thing as far as seeing what the locals get up to or a set back? Any and all info is appreciated!! =)

[also if you have any general tips on accommodation/places to stay/food/transport, that will be appreciate too!!]

i was there last year during the 50th independance celebration and a lot of the locals went to Apia for canoe races and the UB40 concert.I stayed on Savaii and enjoyed the quiet at the fale I was at- the only lack was the fiafia night was changed to a kava ceremony because all the young dancers were in Apia and the Banks, internet places and shops were closed-also the buses werent running
Sunday is a day to be aware of- best to stay put then as not a lot of buses and not much happening.
What type of accommodation are you looking for and what Island - or both, although that might be a bit rushed for 8 days.
I spend quite a bit of time there staying in budget accommodation if you need any info on that , also if you need any bus info... let me know
