Seeing the Goldies Bird of Paradise at its display grounds

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea

As an independent Australian traveller with a passion for the exuberant wildlife of the tropics, I have made several recent trips to PNG, our nearest neighbour, where it is cheap and safe to stay in village guesthouses. You are made to feel special, and are dealing with people who know every inch of their environment.

As a keen birdwatcher I recently travelled to Ferguson island (4 hour boat trip from the mainland) in Milne bay to see 2 Birds of Paradise, found only in this island group. I stayed at Gomwa Guesthouse, run by Siosi Solon, and he took to a friend up the road who showed me both desired birds within half an hour of flat walking through his rainforest, plus many other local species. Seeing the Goldies Bird of Paradise at its display ground (lek) in the rainforest is a once in a lifetime experience.

Highly recommended for the naturalist or lover of village stays, who likes an element of adventure - as well as feeling totally secure. If you want find more Siosi has a website Gomwa Holidays
