Should I skip the South Pacific in Jan because of rainy/typhoon season?Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea
Hi all, I was thinking of planning a trip - maybe to the Cooks and Fji in January (to scuba dive and chill out), but I am worried about the weather. Anyone think it would be OK to plan a trip during this time, or should I go elsewhere - as in, different Pacific Islands during this time of year, or somewhere else altogether? Your thoughts are MUCH appreciated - THANKS!
You worry too much, in Fiji it's said that 55% of rain falls during the Rainy season and the other 45% in the Dry season. I doubt the Cooks are much different. | 1
I have visited the Cook Islands four times in January to March and have had little problem with weather in that time frame. It is a bit more humid and it is storm season, but that close to the equator the seasons are mild. I did manage to hit a cyclone in 2003 on the inter-island freighter, but missed the 2005 storms. No guarantees on weather, but you should be fine. I am going mid January to mid-April this winter and don't even take an umbrella! Papa Mike | 2
Thanks Harry and PapaMike - I think I am just jaded because last year during this time I risked it in Northern Vietnam and spent 12 of 14 days in pouring rain... I just don't want to repeat that experience! | 3
For whatever reason it often rains @ night in Fiji-daytime downpours are brief and monsoon like conditions a-la-SE Asia while not unknown are rare. | 4
