skiing on the cheap

What are some tips for skiing in Australia without spending a fortune? The outrageous or the practical? Are there campsites available around any of the Australian ski fields in winter?

Has anyone done this on a low budget? And had a good time? Stories? I know of one couple that slept in their car for a week, but I doubt they could answer "yes" to the second question.
