Some questions about Tahiti.

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea

I will be in Tahiti in July to see the total eclipse from an atoll with a group that will be spending time in Tahiti itself and Moorea. I might be interested in seeing Bora Bora, but the hotel prices in what seems to be a newlywed paradise are wildly exorbitant. Can you see the highlights of Bora Bora in a day trip? I am thinking about taking the earliest flight out of Papeete, traveling around the island by taxi, and catching the last flight back. As a non-diving, non-snorkeling non-newlywed, just seeing the place might be enough for me. Is this a practical plan? Also, are airfares lower when tickets are purchased there rather than in advance from the U.S.? Also, how are the mosquitoes in Tahiti in July? I have read reports ranging from non-existent to voracious. Will I need repellent (which I try not to use unless it's essential)?

About mosquitoes: I don't remember any in July. It's probably a matter where you are in Tahiti.

Aboutyour plans for BoraBora, if there are flights in the early morning and late afternoon, you can indeed visit in a day trip.

Check out the Tahiti Explorer forum. In addition to lots of tourists, locals hang out there as well.

Its a while since I was there but we had no Mosquito issues at all. The weather was hot but not boiling. Taxi fares however were very annoying; just think London/NY and multiply by 4. It is certainly not the cheapest destination in the region. Moorea is however really beautiful; we witnessed a fantastic double rainbow in Cooks Bay after a rain storm.
