Staying in Pohnpei - Accommodation & Diving

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea

Hi there!

My wife and I are planning to spend 4 days in Pohnpei. Diving is on the cards, as well as visiting Nan Madol.

I've been trying to look for accommodation on the island, and so far have found just a few places that I deemed suitable:

1) The village hotel

2) Yvonne's hotel

3) Joy Hotel

4) Ocean View Plaza Hotel.

Now the questions:

a) Has anyone stayed in any of these properties?

b) Food wise, which one is best?

c) Finally, and more importantly, which one is more suitable for divers?

Any thoughts and comments will be greatly appreciated!

Cheers,

GG

I spent two years diving in Pohnpei and can provide some guidance for you.

Food: Village has some excellent food, however there are a couple other great options in town. You should definitely try out Club Cupid and also Coco Marina. Coco Marina has some of the best Hawaiian poke you'll ever taste. Make sure to ask for the catch of the day as it changes daily and they don't tell you unless you ask.

Diving: The Village is the only PADI dive center on the island. The diving in Pohnpei is spectacular and pristine. You can see photos of it in my gallery:

Accomodations: I know personally the owners of both the Village and Nihco Marine Park. I prefer Nihco because of the enclosed bungalows. The Village is nice too however you are more exposed to the jungle. It's your call what you prefer more. Nihco does not have a restaurant, only a small convenience store but from what I hear they are working on something. Given the choice, I'd stay at Nihco because of the ambience and proximity to the water. They can also provide guide services and take you out fishing "local style." Nihco's web address is http://www.ppasssurf.com/

As for diving, make sure you go to Manta Road to see the mantas we have year round. Another must-see is Ant Atoll. Ant has several different dive environments in one spot. You have wall, drift, lagoon and even a sea mount on the northwest side!

Your last day should be spent touring Nan Madol and some of the gorgeous waterfalls, and don't forget to stop by Pohnrakiet village to pick up some wood carvings.

Feel free to email me at deveyn(at)gmail.com if you have any other questions. I can also assist you with booking and tips for getting a more "local" experience.

Y'vonnes and Jays Grill are good as restaurant and Hotel.
There is also the PCR Hotel and Restaurant. All new kitchen and really good food including a variety of Pokes and catch of the day. All rooms have internet access, tv, ac and a nice view. They also have a nice fleet of boats in front of the restaurant for surfing and tours.
