Surf in PNG

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea

Hi. I wanted to know what the surf is like in PNG around the year and which would be the best way to get there from Sydney. Also, what sort of accomodation can you find there and what's the country like in general? Is it cheap or expensive? Any tips are helpful. Thanks!

I can't comment on the mainland but I did this trip in 2009 and enjoyed it.

Kavieng works best in the months Oct to March each year because the swell is coming from the North Pacific winter storms. Accommodation is good, there are many (8 I think) surf sites they can access. The swell comes a long way so the forecasts are reliable:

Tip: I went straight to the airport in Port Moresby others with me toured the town.

HELLO

PNG IS CRAZY EXPENSIVE / ACCOMODATION IS THE WORST QUALITY PRICE THAT I EVER SEE

BUT FOR AUSTRALIANS PEOPLE ALL COUNTRY ARE CHEAP

You could have a look here http://www.bestofpng.com/pages/lissenung-island/lissenung-surfing.php. There are weekly direct flights from Sydney with Air Niugini, or you can fly up to Brisbane and go from there, 17 flights a week. I don;t know where shouty Lewoski stayed, but whilst PNG running a small-scale eco-friendly resort on a remote island is not cheap, the accommodation and three meals a day on paradise island for $150 is good value given its location.

I'll check into those sites then, thanks fot the tips!
