Surfing and mid range places to stay in Fiji?

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea

We are trying to plan our honeymoon and have been going back and fourth on FIJI and the gulf coast of thailand all week... I am a lame surfer who has little time in the water and would live to get some riding in if we where to go to Fiji... Can anyone tell me where a good spot is to ride? I know that fiji has a few monster waves, but I dont think I am ready for huge reef breaks yet... Is there mild stuff out there also? Also we would like to stay in some decent places with good food and decent rooms... This is one area where thailand seems to take the prize...

There is one beach break in Suva, all the other breaks are over sharp coral... probably wouldn't recommend it if you're not a confidant surfer...

lp, I agree, fiji is world class surf, predominantly heavy reef break. The best surf is on outer islands requiring boat access. There is one sand beach/rivermouth break Ive surfed at Sigatoka, on the south coast of Viti Levu, but still not really a begginers spot.
Thailand can get mellow, fun surf in the Phuket area from about April through Sept, but its the rainy season....

We have booked our flights to Thailand and I will check out the scene in Phuket... Im unsure if its worth bringing my board to a spot that i might be able to surf at...I think I might just leave the board and head to Ubatuba Brazil this winter as I need to head there soon for work and think I will need to do so a number of times this year... Also I have family near there, but cant speak the language for shite... http://www.ubatubasurfcam.com.br/v2/default.htm
