Sydney to Melbourne road trip

Hi We have most of our Oz trip planned & booked...

Adelaide with friends til Boxing day
Fraser Island
Sydney for New Year

... but then we have 8 days free to get to Melbourne and were thinking of a little road-trip!

Any advice on Camper versus Car and accommodation?
What route? (were thinking of starting at Blue Mountains but what about the fires?)

Or even spend more time around Sydney or Melbourne and less on the road trip?

We enjoy walking, scenery, the sea, seafood and beer!
