Tahiti overnight

I'm am returning to New Zealand from New York via Tahiti. I have a 14hour layover (7pm -9am) and was wanting advice - do I need Francs or can I use US dollars? Would I be able to make a trip to the city from the airport? if so how much would it cost (estimated), and would it be safe?
I would like to take a short trip to the beach, even if its just a taxi ride past then head back to the airport.. but Im wondering if its worth it.
Any advice would be much appreciated!

I can answer part of your question. Most places on the island of Tahiti take credit cards. There is an ATM at the airport where you can get French Polynesian Francs for a taxi. The island is very safe. They have storage lockers at the airport. I didn't see any of the beaches on the main island of Tahiti so i can't advise you there.
