Tahiti tom Fiji / How?

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea

I will be coming from Easter Island and Lan Chile only flys to Papeete, I would rather go on to Fiji while i am there, is there any way to get from Tahiti straiht to Fiji???

No, you would have to fly to New Zealand (from Papeete) and then to Fiji.

1

You could try looking at Air Calin - I think they still fly between Papeete and Noumea(New Caledonia) and from there to Nadi. It might be a shorter route but I don't know how it rates for cost factor.

2

As a 3rd option, you could also fly via Australia, taking Virgin Blue to Fiji from there.

Aircalin is likely to be the most expensive, though most exotic option.

3

LAN Chile flies on to Auckland from Papeete and so it might be an option just to add that sector to the flight from Chile and Easter Island. From Auckland it is only a short trip left to go to Fiji.

But I do not see New Caledonia or Australia as real other options. Look at the map: Fiji is NNE of New Zealand and from New Caledonia or Australia it is only a much longer diversion, much farer away, than it already is via Auckland.

Sometimes routings that are longer on the map can work out more economical in fares though. It could also matter which of the three, if any, OP might prefer as a stopover.

5

Sorry to tell you that there is no direct flight from Papeete to Fiji. That's a shame, really, but I guess one of the two don't want the other taking tourists away from them.

6

Thanks for the info..I was stunned that there is no flights between the two... oh well still gonna try to work something out!

Neither Fiji nor French Polynesia were involved in dropping that flight. They were not involved in servicing that route either though. That used to be a weekly (B737) Air New Zealand flight, via Rarotonga, and it turned out to be not profitable enough due to insufficient demand. At least that is what they said.

It is possibly true as hardly any local people would fly that route, just tourists. And there are not that many island hopping tourists around as one might assume regarding the number of questions about that.

In any case Air New Zealand (or the New Zealand Government as their major shareholder) did not have any own interest in improving tourism in Fiji or Tahiti ... So far you might very well be right with your suggestion, #6

When Air New Zealand dropped their Tahiti-Rarotonga flight, French Polynesia and the Cooks joined together to create an inter-island service via Air Rarotonga/Air Tahiti. There are apparently family connections between Tahitians and Cook Islanders so there is reason to have service between the islands.

At that time Air New Zealand also cancelled their service to Los Angeles from Tahiti, they now only code share with Air Tahiti Nui. Someone posted recently that the Cooks government paid ANZ about $5 million NZ to continue operating flights to North America (Los Angeles).

The Fiji/Cook Islands ANZ flight was cancelled at a later date.

Yes, for many yrs there was a flight that connected Fiji to Tahiti, via RAR. but it's been gone for at least a couple of yrs. The Cooks govt subsidizes even the main LAX/RAR flight, and now Air NZ wants more money, so I'd go while you can, to anyone out there in the US/Canada/Europe.

But I think the above suggestion to take the LAN Chile flight on into AKL is a good one. You can stop in Tahiti, but all in all it would be cheaper to get the ticket all the way to AKL (and even further on, depending on where you are going). Then do an RT to Fiji from AKL.

The fuel crisis really contributed to the demise of the regional routes, and as said above, there was not a lot of traffic in the waning days between Fiji and the Cooks.
