tahiti worth it??

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea

I have the opportunity to stopover in Tahiti for a few days and wonder if it is worthwhile? i'm looking to hang out and have a fun and easy life (not a hassle with taxis/being ripped off/safety issues). i'd like time on the beach, walking around markets, biking, kayaking, stuff that is super cheap and takes advantage of nice scenery. i am thinking about going to Moorea instead of Tahiti if that has nicer beaches and hang out spots. though i'm on a tight budget. reommendations? hostel recommendations as well? everything i am finding on the net seems outdated.

First I need to say that I don't feel good about posting here since the downgrade of the Thorntree and their censorship of posts critical of it. (Many of my posts regarding the new TT have been "archived" while older posts not relating to the TT remain.)

Tahiti worthwhile? Oh, YES!!!!

Stay out of taxis, they are very expensive. It is a no hassle, no rip-off, no one trying to sell you s**t place. On the other hand there aren't any touts who will take you by hand to the guesthouse, ferry, bus, etc.

I've posted some useful information on my blog, scroll down for the Tahiti on a Rockbottom budget series.

Tahiti is OK, but expensive. Moorea is a better choice, nicer beaches, check out the cheap camping-type places, they used to have tent-cabins or small huts to rent ot, not sure if they still do. Silvano's link should have good choices.

When I said Tahiti, I meant French Polynesia. Should have been clearer.

Not knocking the island of Tahiti but I've only visited the city of Papeete there. Moorea is a great choice.

Go to Moorea! I loved it. If you use the local bus system on moorea, pay close attention to when the last bus is though. Its easy to miss it and end up paying a huge amount for taxi fare.
