tanna

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea

Hi all,

My wife and I and 3 children (boys aged 16,13&11), plan to stay 6 nights on Tanna in late September and there are a couple of queries I have. Firstly with regards transport across the island from the airport. Is it reasonable to expect to find a lift on a truck (paid for of course), or do we have to rely on the guesthouse to supply transport?(the L.P guide seems rather obscure regarding this).Secondly, with regards accommodation, we plan on staying at a couple of places, maybe at the PRYC or Sunrise , and also closer to the volcano. Looking at several sites on the net it seems there are quite a few to choose from.I was wondering if someone has had experience with any of the following or any other recommendations?Yasur Tribe Bungalows, Tropical Retreat Bungalows, Jungle Oasis, Paradise View, Volcano Smile Bungalows, Volcano Whispering Lodge. Also, is it easy to phone ahead from Port Vila, only a couple of days before or would earlier be advisable?

Sorry about being so longwinded, but information seems hard to come by.
With thanks Norm.

Sorry I can't help with your accommodations querry as we stayed on the other side of the island near the airport. Our accommodation picked us up as we had arranged a package tour with them. If you run a search here for Tanna you should get some replies re Accommodation. You could also post your question on the Vanuatu forum at www.tripadvisor.com - they may even have some reviews of the places you are considering. One thing I would suggest is to book your Tanna flights as soon as possible (if you have not already done so) as they often sell out, especially at that time of year. The trip to Mt. Yasser is well worth it - awesome experience!

Stay at PRYC and you won't be dissappointed .... the location is gorgeous .. it is very simple basic accommodation but wonderful and quite close to the volcano, you can hear it in the distance .... Werri will arrange to get you there and he will also arrange to pick you up from the airport as well .. its quite a long drive ( 2 hours approx ) along very rough roads - more like four wheel drive tracks, sometimes through thick jungle , we choose to go in the back of the ute and we thought the drive to PRYC was one of the highlights of the trip ,
Note it is very isolated and there is no where nearby to buy anything, so with 3 teenagers .. i would take lots of extra nibbles

check out www.positveearth.org for more info on the bungalows
