Tell me about Bora BoraCountry forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea
I will be traveling to Tahiti in July on a package tour that includes time in Tahiti and Moorea. There is an option available to visit Bora Bora at substantial additional expense, including the local flights. Apart from high-end hotels, is there anything in Bora Bora that you can't find in Tahiti and Moorea (beaches, views, geography, historic sites)? Is it worth the extra time and money?
The islands are fairly similar with regard to all the things you have listed but we preferred Bora Bora over Moorea, particularly the lagoon! We just loved the colors and the snorkeling - the trip we did out on the lagoon was much more interesting than the one in Moorea. Although both are quite touristry, we found Bora Bora a little more laid back. When trying to decide if I should include something special but expensive in a trip, I always decide based on whether I'll get the chance again. If it is likely I"ll never get back that way again then I go for it despite the cost! I made a wrong decision a number of years ago and I have regretted it ever since! | 1
As newfie said, Bora Bora does have a magnificent lagoon. It also has that iconic mountain in the middle that you can climb. Moorea is MUCH less touristy, from my experience. It doesn't have the huge lagoon with sting rays who's stingers have been removed for the tourists, but it does have some beautiful bays with far-reaching reefs around the edges and great hiking with wonderful views. In Moorea I think you'll find more of the true local flavour of the Society Islands whereas Bora Bora is quite developed and caters to the well-heeled tourist. I am glad that I have been to both Islands, but I liked Moorea better and would be more likely to return there over Bora Bora. All of that being said, newfie's comment about regret rings true to me as well. I hate to pass up on a great opportunity if it comes my way. I imagine the cost of getting to Bora Bora from Tahiti or Moorea is cheaper than a second trip to the area from home! | 2
