Good grief!

The top 7 "fattest" countries in the world are in the Pacific.

The World's Fattest Countries

The dangers of a genetic disposition coupled with canned "pisupo" (sp? - corned beef) and the ubiquitous "lamb flaps" from Aotearoa (or "Lamp Flabs" as I saw on a sign in Tarawa once!)

All true, bendigo. And then there's the delicious coconut cream to make things even worse.

New Zealand doesn't fare too well either, but we're obviously anorexic compared with the USA.

'Lamp Flabs' - I really like that.

mmmmmmm nothing like a good barbecue of mutton flaps followed by turkey tails....especially if you eat canned fish every day! I know there is a problem with the change of diet but there is also the change in activity that is a large part of the problem too. People in the islands are buying their food at the store instead of using lots of calories to walk way up the hill to the plantation and working there or paddling out in the canoe to fish. Soda pop/fizzy drinks are way too popular too as in many other countries. Aloha

Rice and spam is pretty good for the waistline too. But I wonder what the genetics of it all is- early pictures pre canned food suggest that some of these islands were fairly big before. Wonder if those not big enough to float should they get tipped out of the canoe all drowned before reproducing- leaving the gene pool heavily loaded with large floaters?
