Tonga Adventure Party???

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea

Hi all,

I've got a group of 8-12 friends who are keen to travel to Tonga for whale watching this year. I've seen the whale sharks in Exmouth, Australia and if it's half as good, this will be the experience of a lifetime. We're leaving from Melbourne and Auckland

The aim is some relaxation, exploring, diving, eating and localising. Basically enjoying a few close encounters with all kinds

Can you help with recommendations regarding:

1) Highlights of your trips in Tonga...
2) Places to stay (not real expensive but friendly, comfy, authentic with pool, beach and handy location)?
3) Whale watching operators (good and bad ones)?
4) Good spots for walks?
5) Good spots for dives/snorkling?
6) Best time of year to go?

Thanks so much in advance and happy adventures
Sean

Well if you want to go whale watching then your best bet is Vavau and not Tongatapu. I wouldn't stay on Tongatapu much more than a day or so. Go see the trilithon (Tongas version of stonehenge) and the blowholes etc.

In Vavua you will not find accomodation that fits all of those requirements. If it is on the beach then it wont be central to town.
We preferred Whale Watch Vavau over Whalesong. Good snorkelling and divespots will take a little bit to get to as well. The stuff that is close to any of the accom is all pretty much dead.
Time of year - August/September because that is when the humpbak whales will be there.
