tonga or samoa

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea

Hi all,
I have time off from work for the first week in March But i am unsure of where to go TONGA or SAMOA?
I know that it is the wet season but will it ruin my holiday.
As it is my 10 year wedding anniversary i want somewhere that has accessable activities like deep sea fishing. I would prefer to go with the locals if possible. Also i dont want to stay in a busy city. What are the fales like can anyone suggest a decent/clean place.
Any suggestions or recommendation for anything will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

No one can say...I've been to both countries during the "wet season" many times... I've had both glorious weather some years and have been washed out in others... And most years it's usually a mix of both! It's like a box of chocolates, as a guy named Forest once said.

Many of the beach fales are geared for visitors who come to Samoa/Tonga to do basically nothing at all except laze about... However, I am sure you can arrange fishing with any fale owner. If you want something more organized, go online, search for what you are looking for... I know there are several outfits in Samoa who's speciality is deep sea.

Apia and Nuku'alofa "busy cities?" Cute.

I like the wet season in the Pacfic as the ocean tends to be much calmer and it is so lovely and warm. Samoa will be more humid and hotter than Tonga though.

There are deep sea fishing operators in Vava'u, Tonga. Most of these are not locals though. If you are planning on game fishing then do be aware that the cheaper operators usually kill the fish (to sell, thereby making up the dfference in income), whereas the more expensive options tag and release unless the client specifically requests keeping the fish. I know kiwimagic tag and release, but they owners are not Tongan.

For one week you would be best to fly directly to Vava'u in Tonga or choose Samoa. The latter is very easy to get about and you can do a variety of things in that one week. There probably isn't a huge number of things to do in Vava'u then - snorkelling / diving and fishing, but no whales at that time of year.

I wouldn't stay a week on Tongatapu. That's a lot of time. Very flat, not great beaches, not that much to see. Either get up to Vavau or Haapai, or head to Samoa.

But neither has "cities", unlike Tahiti (Papeete).
