Travel from Indonesia to PNG to Aus...

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea

Hey there...

I'm going to be in Indonesia in May 09 and was wondering if it is possible to travel from Indonesia through PNG and into Australia without having to take a flight.

Can't really find any concrete direction on the www...

Any tips, past routes to share/recommend?

Thanks

Paul

There are no official passenger boats between PNG and Australia, and the waters of Torres Strait can be pretty dangerous.

As above.

However Indonesia to PNG is fairly easy.
See the PNG link in my signo line.
You could even travel all the way from Java to Jayapura in Indonesian Papua by direct Pelni ships, though of course stopping along the way is recommended.
Be sure to allow extra time in Jayapura if planning to get your PNG visa there as the consulate is rather unpredictable.
