travel in PNG in Jan 2010

Since all my friends think travel in PNG is too dangerous and tours are much too expensive, I'm taking the plunge and going on my own as a solo older female in Jan 2010 - approx Jan 11 to Feb 1. Expect to stick to the "safer" areas such as Goroka and Madang and anything else I can find interesting to get to from those areas. Are there any other independent travelers out there in Lonelyplanetland who will be in PNG at that time who might be interested in meeting up for the occasional dinner and/or chat? Any suggestions for how to feel most comfortable on my own on a budget in PNG? Thanks. Susan
