Traveling Solo to PNG

Hello. I am a single female and have a strong desire to go to PNG. I know the Port Moresby can be dangerous and wanted to know if it is as bad as they say--especially if I am traveling alone.

Also, I would like to do some sort of a tour for a week or so out of the 2-3 that I am planning to visit in order to get my feet wet. Does anyone have some good suggestions? I would like to avoid the staged dance shows and take a tour where I can really experience the culture. I am having trouble deciding on what the best itenerary would be. I just ordered the new LP PNG book--so that should help. Any and all suggestions are very much appreciated. This is the first trip I have planned where I feel unsure where to start.
