travelling on a budget in fiji

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea

hi guys! some questions about fiji:

  • is it feasible to travel on a budget in fiji? if so, how much an average daily cost (food, accomm., transportation) would be? by "budget" I mean not more than 40 euros a day.

  • is fiji that much spoilt by crowds, resorts, tourist packages and stuff? can one still find anything off that track? i'm thinking about going end august.

  • how many days would be enough to see the main island (where nadi and suva are)?

cheers!!!

A - yes. If you mean 40 euros for all (food accom and transport) then it is still doable but not in luxury
Still a stay on one or more yasawa islands can fit nicely in that budget

A - No. Most of Fiji is unspoilt , even in high seasons.

3.how many days would be enough to see the main island (where nadi and suva are)?
A- depends on what you want to see. Most tourists DONT travel right around the mainland

Yes. Do some on-location research and pay attention to prices if you want to stay at a resort. A budget Yasawa resort can be at least 50% higher than a similar resort elsewhere on Fiji. The longer you stay, the easier it is to spread the cost of expensive items over the whole trip. I averaged a bit under 30 Euros per day over two months, which even included a couple of internal flights and a dive. But, that was generally quite basic - including using markets for breakfast and lunches, and suppers in the simpler restaurants. At resorts, there is usually a meal plan because there is no other way to eat.

No. Yes, of course. The tourist track isn't all that big, and even on the track the Fijians are very open and approachable (if you want that 'get in contact with locals' experience). Some august-period photos from my own visit.

Impossible to say, as it depends completely on what you want to do. The main island is a big place, and it wouldn't be a stretch to fill 2 weeks with activities. If all you want is a drive-through, then the bus ride Nadi to Suva takes about 5 hours on the south coast road. At least double that (with transfer) if you followed the north coast road.

It would be more practical to make a list of places you want to visit and then figure out how much you can squeeze into the time you have.

www.levukafiji.com gives you ideas about places in Fiji whih are certainly in your budget and are off the main treck.
Take the local bus from Nadi to Suva via Queens Road, then Patterson Ferry over to Ovalau, on your return travel onwards to Nadi via Kings Road. That way you have done a sightseeing tour all around Viti Levu. The bus Nadi Suva takes about 4 hours, then from Korovou to Nadi its about 8 hours.

  1. You can survive with 40 euros. It will be around $120 FJD. A decent hotel will cost u around $60-$70 and the rest can be for ur travelling and food etc. That is u stay in Nadi. Its Tourist Capital of Fiji and Very affordable and lots to see.

  2. Fiji is not at all spoint by huge crowds but rathers it get more adventurous that time of the year around.

  3. There isnt much to see on the main islands..u wont need more than 3 days. But I recommend u stay in Nadi. Explore a lil bit of the Coral Coast and the Mananuca's & Yasawas. Nadi is the Hub of tourism. and getaway to all major islands. for surfing, snorkelling, and all tourist related activities.
