Travelling PNG

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea

Hi

I am about to embark on a journey throughout PNG and was in need of some advice. The LP guidebook is not specific enough.

I am wanting to travel from Wewak to Madang, from Madang to Goroka, and then from Goroka to Lae - overland. Is this safe? I have heard mixed reports so far. PMV's would be my preferred option - but maybe safer to get a driver. Can anyone advise either way and maybe suggest where I can get a driver from.

And, I have no idea how to get from Wewak to Madang. On the map I can see a road from Wewak to Angoram, but it goes no further. Im guesssing its then a boat across the Sepik and then pick up another PMV on the other side - but where from?

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks
Matt

See the PNG link in my signo line for the Wewak-Madang thing - but I think even the horrible Lp guide has that info.

Of course PMVs are never 100% safe, but most travellers happily survive them.

I'm assuming you're a male, and that should keep you relatively safe,

What you're proposing to do is relatively easy. the ship from wewak to madang might take a bit of time, but once you're here (madang) the PMV leave everyday for Goroka and Lae

Of course, once you're here, remember to stock up on the souvenirs like billums and some carvings

PNG is not too bad generally, unless you start wondering drunk through settlements after dark

Use your head and enjoy
