Trekking in the PNG Highlands

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea

Wondering if anyone has any advice on DIY trekking routes in PNG for early October. Unfortunately I only have 1 1/2 weeks for the Highlands so want to make sure I choose right. I was thinking of going from Goroka up Mt Wilhelm and then down to Madang. Anybody traveled this route or heard about it? Alternatively, I was thinking that there might be some nice treks around Tari but info is scant.

Anyone have anything to recommend? Also, what is the latest safety situation - are there any areas to be avoided, like around Mendi? What's the latest on traveling the full length of the Highlands Highway?

I am happy to hire a guide, but would prefer to find one spontaneously in the local area rather than pre-booking something inflexible and pricey in advance...

The treks around Mount Wilhelm are certainly safer and more scenically spectacular, though perhaps somewhat less interesting culturally than the Tari area.
Plus, at Kegsegul it is is VERY easy to hire guides/porters locally at reasonable rates.
I can heartily recommend the very helpful and cheap East Kege Guest House in Kegsegul for help and info - they also have a very interesting travellers' comments' book, one of only two I've seen in all PNG!
See the PNG link in my signo line for more.
