Tuvalu, the least visited country in the world, apparently...

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea

Has anyone ever been? Trying to find flights from London to Funafuti (the island airport) was...interesting...and at a staggering £1800 return via Los Angeles and Fiji with Air New Zealand!

Has anyone ever been?

Of course getting there is not cheap.
Though you could cut NZ out of the itinerary by flying to Fiji via Hong Kong.

I never mentioned anything about flying through NZ...lol...I said it was flying with Air NZ via LA and Fiji!

2

Since it was apparently too difficult for you to find the Tuvalu posts on this forum (ever heard of search?), I think it was fair enough to assume you may not have found the most direct ways to get there, too. LOL

3

You just misread what I originally posted.

4

My dear UK travel expert, if you looked into what I suggested, you could see that it cuts Air New Zealand out of the itinerary altogether.

But of course you already know everything better than the rest of us and only posted here to waste our time.

However, I'm glad to see that by pointing out the relevant country branch and the search function I could still show something novel even to someone as bright as yourself.

I'm afraid that Air New Zealand doesn't fly to Funafuti. So I think that Air New Zealand will operate the flight from London to Los Angeles but from Los Angeles to Funafuti (changing planes in Nadi and Suva), you'll be flying with other airline/s.

@Laszlo: the problem with the route through Hong Kong is that you should expend two nights in Fiji on you return to London.

6

@anillos: How I wish I'd had that "problem" right now - in fact I'd happily spend more than just 2 nights in Fiji as well. And I bet I'm not the only one.

BTW, there are no airlineS to Funafuti - it's served by Air Pacific only.
Or so it was earlier this year when I was in Tuvalu.

I know that there's only one airline to Funafuti. Nowadays it's Air Pacific but if I'm right, it was Air Fiji in the past. I has said airlines because from Los Angeles you arrive to Nadi and the flight to Funafuti departs from Suva and the flights Nadi to Suva are operated by Pacific Sun.

I just read the OP again. Wouldn't it be cheaper going via Asia rather than America? Air Asia offers cheap flights London to NZ via Kuala Lumpur.

9

@ anillos - yes, I only said Air NZ cos that's what MOST of the journey is on. I've already done my research and that was the cheapest that came up. Hell, I even told the travel agent I asked (I could find NOTHING online for it...) that it was Air Pacific from Fiji to Funafuti with Air Pacific on Tuesdays and Thursdays only.

@Ozziegiraffe - Apparently, it wasn't...

That isn't right. You fly 11h. 30m. with Air New Zealand (from London to Los Angeles) but you fly with Air Pacific 13h. (10h. 40m. from Los Angeles to Nadi plus 2h. 20m from Suva to Funafuti) and 30m. with Pacific Sun from Nadi to Suva.

I've been able to find some fares online on random dates. I don't know your travel dates so I can't tell you if they are cheaper.

OP, are you sure your travel agent even considered Air Asia? Most of them don't. Look for Air Asia fares online.
