Two days in Palau ... what's a girl to do? ?

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea

Hi Papa Mike and all others with great info!

I'm going to Palau, at the end of May, two days early to experience the sights and sounds before sailing on the Big Blue Explorer for a week of diving ... can you say SHARKS! ! ! ! !

I'm not interested in going kayaking to Rock Islands or Peleliu land based excursion (will have access to that when on the boat) ... but would greatly appreciate any other suggestions. Isn't there a waterfall somewhere on the island? Dolphin encounter at the big resort? Turtle research station? If anyone has feedback about these or other ideas, I would love to hear from you. A big THANKS!

Susan

P.S. As you can tell, I'm a big nature/animal lover. So shopping isn't out of the question, just for a few t-shirts though. :)

Hi Susan, There is indeed a waterfall or two over on Babeldaub, the largest island in the chain. You could rent a car and head towards Negremau (sp) Falls, or look into a land tour conducted by Necco Marine or Blue Planet, there are several people running land tours to the falls. Dolphins Pacific has a great show at their site off Malakal. They are next to Necco Marine and the tour includes picking you up at your lodging and return, a day well spent. I am sorry I don't have some phone and E-mail contacts, but I am down in outer Cook Islands updating my Cook Islands Handbook and not at my desk Stateside with the book in my hands.

Of course Susan, you could order the E-Book from Amazon and have all the info on your laptop.

Have a great trip.

Yes, Ngardmau Waterfall is worth a visit. Probably one of the more impressive waterfalls in the Pacific. Be prepared for a one hour hike from the road (and back), though.
Most tours also include a trip to the stone monoliths in Baldrulchau, a downed japanese seaplane, the monstrous government buildings and a beautiful bai in Melekeok.
My pics from Ngardmau etc is here

But after the waterfall DON“T MISS the Indian Restaurant. Forgot the name but there is only one in town. Best Indian Cuisine I ever had outside of India.

Enjoy

Don't know if on the boat you will also visit the Jellyfish lake, but that's also quite a particular experience : in a lake on one of the rock island are trapped hundreds, thousands of jellyfish who are not dangerous anymore (because for thousands of years they didn't have any natural enemy anymore). You can snorkel around the lake and with literally hundreds of jellyfish around you. Don't miss that either.

Thanks everyone! Will be snorkeling Jellyfish Lake on the last day of the liveaboard. Will research other suggestions though.

Just rec'd my Islands magazine with a beautiful pic of Palau's Rock Islands on the cover ... I can't wait to get there! This girl needs to get wet! ! !
