Up to 6 weeks trip

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea

Hello everybody,

I'm from the Central Europe, Czech Republic. I'm about to start planning my 5 or 6 weeks trip. Could anybody here give me please any advice or recomendation ragarding this?;) Thanks in advance to anybody contributing!

My wish is to go through the US accross Hawaii and Pacific islands to Australia and back. Do you think, that it's posbible to make it in such a short time.

Counting my previous visit of US I'd like to spent there about 10 days...no more. I'll to concentrate on Pacific and Australia area. Loving scuba diving I'd like to take this opportunity to see some "underworld" on some pretty amazing places;) I'm trying to get as much information about accomodation, car rental, local specialities etc. as possible.

Has anybody already done similar trip to what I'm going to do?

Any hint will be appreciated!

Thanks a lot.
Petr

Of course you can do it but you won't exactly have much time in the islands.

Say you have 6 weeks, that is 42 days.
You'll spend 10 days of that in the US, then another 4 or so just on planes and airports... that leaves you with 4 weeks to tour Australia and the islands.
Well, Air Pacific can get you from Hawaii to AU with a stopover in Fiji - this is probably your best bet. If you found time to use it, you could also get their Bula Pass to visit one or more of 5 other Pacific island nations out of Fiji, but if you do so, you'll barely have time left for AU. If that doesn't put you off, the Solomon Islands should offer the best diving among those reachable on that pass.

I suggest you buy the relevant LP guidebook for general info.

kozisekp... I am heading down to the Pacific, travelling between 01/12 and 20/01, plan is to go via Hong Kong and Fiji to Vanuatu, New Caledonia, Samoa(s), Tonga. Had to give up the Cook and Solomon Islands for logistic and convenience reasons. I know this is not the Travel Companion part, but if the dates coincide, PM me if you want.

Kosisepk, do you realise that Australia is as big as the USA? ou would not see most of Australia alone in 6 weeks. It is not possible to fly direct from Hawaii to Solomon Islands, but ou could go via Fiji.
Possible itinerary: Hawaii; Fiji: Solomon Islands (one week in Western province); Brisbane Australia, heading north to Cairns and/or the Whitsunday islands (if you are in Australia between March and October). Between October and March, marine stingers make it impossible to swim without a protective suit in North Queensland, and it is cyclone season. In Ocotber to March, you can do good diving at places like Heron or Great Keppel Islands (which are still Barrier Reef, but further south) or Byron Bay (south of Brisbane).
Check Solomon Airlines and Pacific Blue (Virgin) for flights between Honiara and Brisbane.

Well I see I did throw a question on a right place...;)

I realized, that to make all I described in just 6 weeks is probably not feasible at all. I need someone to say it.

As I wrote your posts I also realized, that Salomon Islands (SI) are very good...well pretty much for everything I've been looking for:) Little bit annoying fact is of course my job. Otherwise I'd spend there at least 3 to 4 months. As I went briefly through the descriptions of such places like Fiji or SI it seems that best time to approach it is sometime during May/June.

Has anyone of you here spent some time on Salomon Islands and could me recommend the best place where to crash for several days? I'm looking for some place with good air connection and not so turistic.

I will definitely look for a LP book in my neiberhood to read up on that as well.

Thanks for replies.
I hope this discussion will continue.

thx

Well, if you want somewhere with diving facilities and good air connections, it's not likely to be a place "not touristic" - dive shops are where the tourists are! ;-)
Therefore OG's suggestion of Western Province (Gizo or Munda) is your best bet in the Solomons.
But in that country, even this most "touristic" province won't exactly be as crowded as Phuket, Langkawi or Ibizia! ;-) Or Hawaii or places you are likely to visit in AU for that matter...
