Vanuatu, Solomon Island and PNG during Dec - Feb

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea

Hi fellow travelers,

I'm planning to go to the Pacific end of this year. I would really like to visit Vanuatu the Solomon Islands and PNG in the period of December until end of Februari. Has anyone ever visited in this period? In all LP's this period is described as wet Typhoon season. How big is the risk of having my entire period there being rained on or even worse having an encounter with a Typhoon?

Thanks in advance for all you advice.

I visit Solomon Islands regularly. Some areas are better at that time of year than at other times. Cyclones don’t happen all the time, and can’t be predicted. I actually sat through one on a remote island in July a couple of years ago.
The biggest problem in Solomon Islands in December and January is the local holiday season. If you are a backpacker or other budget traveller, be aware that local transport will be overbooked and/or overcrowded with local workers and students heading home for the Christmas holidays.
Even when it rains, it tends to be only part of the day, usually the afternoon.
