Is it possible to do a day trip to a volcano from Port Vila ? We are staying at Paradise Cove Resort-anyone what this is like ? Also-do we need anti-malarials ?
Hi! I do believe it is possible to do a day trip from Port Vila to Tanna. PV has tons of "tour operators". However I'm not sure of the cost. If you didn't want to go with a "tour", then it is a bit more difficult to arrange, especially if you are trying to get it all done in one day. If I were you I would consider doing an overnight trip ... I'm doubtful it will be much more expensive than a day trip, and the volcano is magnificent when viewed at dusk and into the night (you would really be missing something special to NOT see it glowing at night, especially if you are already paying to get there). You could arrange a one or two night trip from PV or you could arrange the trip to the volcano from your accommodations on Tanna. It is about a two hour, somewhat rough, truck/bus trip from the airport to the volcano, but well worth it. We actually hiked to the volcano from Port Resolution (we were staying on our yacht), which was fantastic, but it was a good 5 hour hike (we arranged for transportation coming back). If you opt for the night trip, make sure they plan on getting you to the volcano while it is still light - it is cool to check out the volcanic rock and steam. Then make sure they are allowing you to stay until it is completely dark. Its best if you have a flashlight, but if with a "tour" then they usually bring one along. Also bring a light jacket because it can be quite cool at night. We did take an anti-malarial (doxycycline), but some of our friends did not - I'd check the latest on the cdc website. Enjoy Vanuatu - it is a terrific place. | 1
