Vegetarian food availablity and price in Tuvalu & KiribatiCountry forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea
If anyone has actually been that far out, please give input about this subject. I'd guess fish consists 90% of their daily diet, so how could a vegetarian survive there? -J
Yes fish and seafood form large part of the diet along with rice. Few fruit and vegetables grow there but breadfruit, pandanus and coconut are readily available and sometimes pumpkin. On Tarawa in Kiribati some of the local shops do stock other fresh fruit and veg but this is limited to what has been received on the most recent cargo ship. It isn't cheap though. There are tinned fruit and veg in some stores. It's probably to take as much as you can with you, in packet form or whatever if you want a bit of variety from rice and breadfruit, especially if you are going to an outer island. It is possible as a vegetarian but it would be a bit of a dull diet for the duration! | 1
