visiting noumea on a monday - are sights open?

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea

hi we are in noumea for one day only on monday 7 july, from the cruise ship. i read somewhere that most attractions are shut on monday. is this correct? we did not want to do the ship's trips as they are excessively overpriced but p & o seems to book up the tour operators. is it possible to just find a tour operator or a local at the wharf to show you some sights? and what would you suggest? we are a family of 4. are australian dollars accepted as a medium of exchange or do you have to purchase some local currency - XPF.
thank you for any assistance you can offer mike

Unfortunately, the most important sight of Noumea (in my opinion), Centre Culturel Tjibaou, is really closed on Monday. Musée de la Ville de Nouméa and Musée de Nouvelle-Calédonie are open. You don't need a guide for a city tour, since the centre of Nouméa is tiny, just Place des Cocotiers and the area south of it.
Currency: When in Australia, is the XPF accepted as a medium of exchange or do you have to purchase some local currency?

What is an XPF? I am in Australia, but don't know what that is.

2

xpf means french pacific franc, the local currency used mike

Thanks, Mike. I would suspect that the Aussie dollar would be more negotiable in Noumea than the XPF would be in Australia, despite Venezio's comment.
