Volcanic Ash Cloud

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea

I'm flying Sydney-Vila next Wednesday. Should I be concerned about the volcanic ash cloud? Air Vanuatu's flight schedules haven't been affected as yet, but the Volcanic Ash Advisory Centre in Wellington has issued a warning to travellers about the ash cloud. I guess I'll get on the plane, if it isn't cancelled. Should I be worried about this?

I'm flying from Port Vila to Sydney next Thursday so if you're worried I should be too - I'm not.

At the moment the ash cloud is only affecting a fairly localised area and as far as I know, hasn't affected flights into or out of Port Vila.
I was in the Air Vanuatu office this afternoon enquiring about a trip to see the volcano. I was told that no trips were operating to Mt Yasur ( not surprising) but he didn't mention that even flights to Tanna had been affected let alone Port Vila.

Here's what the local newspaper is reporting.

Rest assured that they're keeping a close eye on it and I'm sure they won't risk their planes or passengers.
