Wallis and Futuna

Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea

I'm looking at posibly visiting the Wallis and Futuna Islands from Australia. I was wondering if anyone had been there and the ways that they travelled there. I have trying looking into it and it seems you can fly in only from Tahiti or from New Caladonia but I've had trouble getting prices. I was also wondering if anyone had got to the islands by boat?

There are no longer flights from Tahiti, only from New Caledonia and Fiji.
From Fiji, it was ca. 500 USD RT to Wallis.
There are no passenger boats, and the odd cargo ships going there from NC take no passengers.

One thing that was pretty cool on Wallis and Futuna: no local bus or transport besides from a school bus, but no problem to hitchhike, you easy get taken along, in many cases they even detoured to drop us where we were planning to go.
Plenty of folks have brand new cars on the island, they are doing quite well, French gov seems to pump in quite some money...
