"We're recession Proof!" Says the Cook Islands...Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea
The government of the Cook Islands is declaring itself as "an oasis from the recession" saying the islands and their economy is not subject to the global downturn of the economy. Gosh, I'm not sure if this is a good thing or bad thing... Could be interpeted as "Our economy is still strong so prices are still high" or "Don't expect any bargains or deals here". The media is the message. [http://www.nzherald.co.nz/travel/news/article.cfm?c_id=7&objectid=10573198]
For New Zealanders the Cooks are one of the few places (Niue and ?) where their dollar is still worth a dollar. And for others it's a bargain. Casually looking at accomodations I did note a mid-range on Aitutaki requesting that clients email for recession specials. Tahiti, badly hit by the recession, has also decided to act like there is no recession. Workers are striking the Sofitel. The national airline has decided to offer it's largest market (North America) the choice of discount flights valid for a 4 day stay maximum or discount flights to New Zealand where the plane stops in Tahiti but you can't stopover. | 1
