Weather in February?Country forums / Pacific Islands & Papua New Guinea
Hi, I booked a trip to Rarotonga in February 2009 (14 to 21). I knew this is the wet season, but it is also the hurricane season.... Can somebody tell me something more about the weather in that time of year? Thanx! Soleill
Hi Soleill- I routinely travel to Rarotonga in January & February, and yes it is hurricane season and the rainy season. Seasons are moderated when you are that close to the equator. It is a little hotter. Exactly what the weather will be during your visit is an unknown. The rain typically falls in brief downpours and rarely affects what you will do that day. I have never considered either side of the island for more or less rain, depends on clouds and the winds, so relatively unpredictable. The upside for me is missing winter in Montana, the island is less crowded that time of year. Be sure and travel to Aitutaki, the day trip is probably your best bet with only seven days in the Cooks. I am sure you will enjoy the island and the people, let me know if I can help further. Papa Mike | 1
The weather systems usually come in from the east. But Raro is a tiny island, with low hills that do not slow the storms down, so the rain will hit the west side maybe 10-15 minutes after it hits the east side. The humidity is what is constant, and as Papa Mike said, rain comes in flourishes for an hour, then will be gone for a few hours. If humidity bothers you, get a place with A/C (or a ceiling fan at the least if you can;t afford A/C). You can book the first night or two at any of the backpacker places, then move to another one if you don't like it. It's a tiny island, only 20 miles around. | 2
